Our firm is considering the use of the 360 degree periodic review technique for our managers. Essentially it means that the employees review their bosses. Does anyone have any experience with this approach? Can you share your experiences? What are other people's opinions about this technique? How successful is it?Thanks for any comments, CS

I've heard positive and negative feedback from organizations who have implemented this sort of approach. It all depends on the way it is built into the culture of the company. I too am interested in comments from managers who have actually been involved in these upward evaluations. |

I have seen something called the 3-3-1. It was used bi-directionally in the mgmt part of the org chart. Basically, I would do a 3-3-1 for my boss, and being a manager myself, I would have 3-3-1's done on me by my direct staff. The 3-3-1 document would include 3 good things a person does, 3 bad things, and 1 thing that absolutely needs improvement. Items could be project related or competency related. Best of luck. Regards, Joe. |

Sounds like an interesting idea - but I would not be in favor of making this a "formal" activity. I would see a place for this during the review process itself, probably through better reviewer training - helping the manager to find the courage to ask an employee "how am I doing"? |
